- August 2007-Present: Upper School Science Teacher and Interact Club Sponsor at Athens Academy. Courses taught include Biology and Honors Human Biology.
- January 2006-December 2009: Part-time Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics and Science Education, University of Georgia. Courses taught include Elementary Science Methods (ESCI 4420), Physical Science for Middle School Teachers (CHEM 1010), Reflections on Science Teaching (ESCI 5470), Teaching Strategies for Middle and Secondary Science (ESCI 7040) and a Special Topics Graduate Class in which students in the M.Ed. program construct their final portfolio (ESCI 7650).
- August 2003-December 2006: Coordinator and Teaching Assistant for Project FOCUS (Fostering Our Community’s Understanding of Science), University of Georgia, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Responsibilities: I placed college science majors in elementary science classrooms in 4 schools around UGA. The college students were enrolled in a credit-bearing service-learning program. I facilitated collaboration between the college science students and the elementary teachers, lead weekly reflection sessions on campus, grade weekly journals, and support the college students’ efforts in science instruction. This involves instruction in elementary science methods, as well as discussion relating to issues such as multicultural education, students with special needs, and technology in the classroom.
- August 2005-December 2005: Teaching Intern, Site Based Secondary Science Methods Course (ESCI 3450), University of Georgia, Science Education, under the direction of J. Steve Oliver. Responsibilities: I provided input in the formulation of the course syllabus, planned and delivered lessons to the aspiring teachers, graded journal entries, and facilitated course discussions and teacher/student teacher communication.
- June 2003: Teaching Assistant, Motivating Students to Learn Math and Science Workshop, University of Georgia, Science Education under the direction of Shawn M. Glynn and with the support of an Improving Teacher Quality grant. Responsibilities: I was charged with helping Dr. Glynn create and implement an effective 1-week workshop with the aims of improving motivation of students to learn math and science. I facilitated a series of field trips for the participating teachers, including the Athens Botanical Garden, the Georgia Museum of Natural History, and the UGA Institute of Ecology.
- January 2003-May 2003: Teaching Assistant, Motivating Students to Learn Math and Science, (EPSY/ESCI 6470) University of Georgia, Science Education under the direction of Shawn M. Glynn. Responsibilities: This 3 credit-hour course was an extended version of the above workshop and was also funded by an Improving Teacher Quality grant. I helped with grading, facilitating discussions, compiling web resources, and providing instruction in methods to improve motivation for math and science learning.
- August 2002-December 2002: Research Assistant under the direction of Shawn M. Glynn, Contextual Teaching and Learning (project funded by the U.S. Dept of Ed.), University of Georgia, Science Education. Responsibilities: I was charged with interviewing a research participant who was a practicing teacher in a nearby county in an effort to understand how methods consistent with CTL were being implemented in her classroom.
- January 2002-May 2002: Teaching Assistant under the direction of Shawn M. Glynn, Active Assessment for Active Science, (EPSY/ESCI 6470), University of Georgia, Science Education. Responsibilities: I helped with grading, facilitating discussions, compiling web resources, and providing instruction in methods of assessment for science.
- August 1999-May 2001: Science Teacher and Basketball Coach, Heritage High School Rockdale County Public Schools, Conyers, GA. Courses Taught: Biology, Physical Science, Principles of Technology.
Awards
- January 2011: Named Honorary Rotarian and Honorary Paul Harris Fellow by the Classic City Rotary Club. These awards recognize commitment to the Rotary Motto of Service above Self.
- December 2010: Rotary Teacher of the Semester. This award is given by the Oconee County Rotary Club.
- August 2010: Outstanding Biology Teacher for Georgia. This award is granted by the National Association of Biology Teachers, and only one is given in Georgia.
- November 2005: Amazing Student (nominated by faculty and award is posted on the UGA website (www.uga.edu), University of Georgia
- April 2005, recognized with the Excellence in Teaching Award, Honors Day, University of Georgia. This award requires nomination by a faculty member and selection by the Office of Instructional Support and Development. Only four of these are awarded each year across the University.
- April 2005, recognized with the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, Honors Day, University of Georgia. This award requires nomination from the faculty member overseeing my graduate assistantship.
- Fall 1996-Spring 1999, recipient of the Robert F. Maddox Ecology Scholar Award, Berry College, Rome, GA. Nominated by biology faculty to receive an endowed scholarship.
Grants Funded
- January 2003- Creating an Appreciation for Dr. Martin Luther King in the Latino Community, Corporation for National and Community Service, CoPI with D. A. Knauft, $5,200. This grant provided funds to support a service-learning project at a mobile-home park where UGA students tutor Latino children after school. It also provided for a celebration about Martin Luther King and fostered understanding between Latinos and African-Americans.
- October 2003—Minority Recruitment, Georgia Board of Regents, CoPI with D. A. Knauft, $500. These funds were used to recruit minority university students to participate in the service-learning program mentioned above so that the Latino youth would have realistic mentors.
